Facts and Figures - Apprenticeship in Austria

Apprenticeship based on the principle "learning in practice for practice" has a long tradition in Austria.

The Vocational Training Act (Berufsausbildungsgesetz – BAG, only available in German) includes the related statutory rules.

Apprentices acquire professional skills in entrepreneurial reality at companies. They receive theoretical and general education in part-time vocational schools. To run this successful "dual system" all responsible bodies at federal, regional and local levels as well as companies work closely together.

At the end of 2024

106.452 apprentices trained in about 217 different apprenticeship occupations, of which

  • 100.751 in 27.390 training-companies and
  • 5.701 in inter-company training institutions
